Is Autumn a Good Season for Moving?

Often, people have little control over when they have to relocate. However, certain times of the year can make for a more comfortable moving experience if given a chance. Autumn is a good choice. Here’s why the fall can be one of the best times to plan your residential relocation project.

Moving companies might have more openings at the end of summer.

Most sources will tell you that most residential moves occur from June to September. This is an understandable time frame for a few reasons:

    • Most people favor moving during non-winter months
    • Summer brings along vacations and breaks from work and school
    • Many people try to get moved and settled before the holidays

While all this is something to consider during your move, prolonging your relocation until the latter part of the year in the fall can make things easier. One of those reasons is it may be easier to pin down a moving company that can help. However, finding a company with free time to assist in the busiest months of the year may be challenging.

Autumn tends to bring more comfortable temperatures.

One reason people love autumn is the change in temperatures. For example, in Columbus, OH, in October, high temps tend to hover from 59-71ºF, whereas highs in July can be closer to 84ºF. The cooler temps can be much more bearable when packing and toting boxes and furniture. Plus, you won’t have to be so concerned if you have to forgo the air conditioner in the old or new house if the power is not yet connected.

Connecting with new neighbors is easier.

Meeting new people is less of a challenge in the autumn because it is still warm enough for people to spend time outside. Bonfires, block parties, games, and festivals are great opportunities to get to know your neighbors.

Moving in the fall means getting settled before the holidays.

Once November hits for a lot of people, it can seem like a never-ending list of things to get done, places to go, and people to see. However, if you are moving in the fall, you can get settled and ready before the holidays. For example, if you plan your move for mid-to-late October, you would have roughly a month of unpacking and organizing time to prepare the new place before Thanksgiving.

An autumn move means the children are back in school.

While many people choose to move in the summer because the kids are out of school, for some parents, it can be better to move after school starts back up. If you have smaller children, children with special needs, or simply grumpy teens that don’t want to be involved, it can be less stressful if they spend some time out of the house and at school. For example, a four or five-year-old may need more help with packing and can demand a lot of attention.
