Rental Moves Done Right: A Chillicothe Renter’s Guide
Posted By: herlihywp Comments: 0 Categories: Moving Tips
Renting a home comes with a different rhythm than owning one. Leases end on specific dates, deposits ride on how the place looks when you leave, and your new landlord may hand you a fifty-page welcome packet before the ink is dry. If you’re moving between apartments or rental homes in Chillicothe, OH, a little extra planning goes a long way.
Read Your Lease Before You Book the Truck
Every rental agreement has small print worth revisiting a month before you move. Look for the required notice period (30 or 60 days is common), move-out cleaning obligations, restrictions on move-in and move-out hours, and rules about elevator or loading-dock use in bigger buildings.
If your notice window is 60 days and you give 30, you could owe an extra month of rent. Review your lease agreement and mark key deadlines on your calendar as soon as you secure your new address.
Protect Your Security Deposit
Under Ohio Revised Code 5321.16, a landlord has 30 days after you move out and return possession to itemize deductions in writing and send back what’s left of your deposit. Two habits protect that timeline. Take date-stamped photos or video of every room, closet, and appliance the day you move out, after cleaning. Send your forwarding address to the landlord in writing so they have somewhere to mail the check. Missing that second step is one of the most common reasons deposits get delayed.
Pro Tip: Compare your move-out photos to the move-in condition report you signed when you first got the keys. If a scuff was there on day one, you don’t have to pay for it on day last.
Coordinate With Your New Building
Apartment complexes and managed rentals often have their own moving rules. Some require a certificate of insurance from your moving company. Some reserve elevators by the hour. Others limit trucks to certain loading zones and charge a fee if you miss the window.
Call your new leasing office two weeks out and ask about allowed moving hours, reserved elevator or loading areas, and whether they need a certificate of insurance from the movers. If they do, your moving company can send one over.
Right-Size the Move
A one-bedroom apartment doesn’t need the same crew as a four-bedroom house. Overbooking wastes money; underbooking turns a four-hour job into eight. When you request a quote, be specific: number of rooms, any oversized items (couches that need to come apart, a Peloton, a full-size washer), stairs or elevators at both ends, and whether you have a parking spot for the truck.
For studios and small one-bedrooms, a local moving crew of two movers is often plenty. Two-bedrooms usually run three. Ask for an in-home or video walkthrough rather than a phone estimate so the crew can plan around what they’ll actually be moving.
Pack for Smaller Spaces
Rentals rarely have basements or oversized garages. Each box you move in is a box you have to find a home for. Pack with unpacking in mind: label boxes by the room they’re going into at the new place, not the room they came out of. Keep a “first night” tote with sheets, towels, phone chargers, medications, and a shower curtain so you don’t have to dig at midnight.
If your new rental is tighter on square footage, be honest before the truck loads. Donate the second dresser, or sell the oversized coffee table.
Pro Tip: Take a photo of the back of your TV and any electronics before you unplug them. Reconnecting cables in a new apartment goes a lot faster when you have a visual reference.
Consider Renters Insurance Before Day One
Many Ohio landlords require renters insurance in the lease. Even when it isn’t, a basic policy typically covers your belongings against theft, fire, and certain water damage, plus a bit of liability if someone gets hurt in your unit. The Insurance Information Institute’s renters insurance guide walks through what most policies include and what they don’t. Lock in coverage the day your lease starts so there’s no gap during the move itself.
