Good packing is essential to a stress-free move. As you prepare for your move, trust the Columbus, Ohio professionals at Herlihy Moving & Storage to guide you every step of the way, starting with these moving tips.
Get Organized
Before you start, it’s a good idea to gather everything you’ll need, including:
- Sturdy boxes of various sizes with flaps that can be completely closed.
- Packing paper.
- Packing tape for sealing packed boxes.
- Felt-tipped markers for labeling boxes.
Once you have everything you need, you can get started with packing your bedroom. Start by sorting the contents of your bedroom to decide what you want to take with you. Set aside items you prefer to discard or donate.
How to Pack Clothing, Shoes and Linens
Decide which items of clothing you’ll need during your move and for the first few nights in your new home. Set these articles aside or pack them in a suitcase so that they’re easily accessible.
To make sure your clothes arrive at your new home wrinkle-free, leave them on hangers and pack them in a wardrobe box. One box will hold about two feet of compressed clothing on hangers.
If you’re not using wardrobe boxes, you should remove each garment from its hanger, fold, and place it in a suitcase or box lined with clean paper.
Shoes can be left in their boxes and then placed in a medium-sized box. If you no longer have the shoe boxes, wrap each shoe in plain newsprint paper and then wrap each pair together before placing in a box that is cushioned with wads of paper.
Protect blankets, sheets, towels and pillow cases with a sheet of paper and then pack in a box. You can protect curtains and draperies by hanging them in a wardrobe box. If you don’t have a wardrobe box, wrap them in clean newsprint and pack in a medium-size box.
Tips for Packing Small Appliances, Books and Framed Pictures
For small items such as clocks and radios, wrap the items individually and pack them in a box cushioned with crushed paper.
Pack books with the spine down and the open side of the book up. Because books are heavy, use small book boxes to make them easy to carry.
It’s important to protect framed photos with packing paper. Stand them on edge in the carton. You may want to purchase special boxes for mirrors and large picture frames that have glass.
Pack all cartons tightly, filling in any extra spaces with crumpled paper to keep items from shifting during the move
Protect Your Bed during Moving
When it comes to packing your bed, ask us for a special mattress box to protect your mattress from dirt and damage during the move.
Take Irreplaceable Items with You
If possible, carry irreplaceable items like heirloom photos and jewelry with you to the destination.
