Did you know that nail polish and hairspray are hazardous substances? So are common household cleaners, including ammonia and liquid chlorine bleach. Even aerosol air fresheners can pose a threat during transportation.
By law, Herlihy Moving & Storage cannot move materials that are flammable, corrosive, poisonous or explosive. These items also cannot be stored in our Mayflower Portable Storage Containers (pods).
Before your things are packed and loaded, please take some time to look for and set aside these hazardous items:
- Aerosol Cans
- Ammonia
- Ammunition
- Car Batteries
- Charcoal/Lighter Fluid
- Chemistry Sets
- Cleaning Solvents
- Darkroom Chemicals
- Fertilizer
- Fire Extinguishers
- Fireworks
- Fuels/Oils
- Household Batteries
- Kerosene
- Liquid Chlorine Bleach
- Loaded Guns
- Matches
- Nail Polish
- Paint Thinners
- Paints/Varnishes
- Pesticides
- Poisons
- Pool Chemicals
- Propane Tanks
- Sterno Fuel
- Weed Killer
If possible, use up all of these materials before you move. You might try giving unused items to a friend or neighbor. For other disposal suggestions, check out this fact sheet on hazardous materials from the Ohio State University Extension Service.
Fuel tanks of gasoline-powered lawnmowers and other tools must be drained before transport. In addition, batteries must be removed from battery-operated appliances and then discarded.
In addition to hazardous materials, Herlihy Moving & Storage does not carry perishable foods and plants on long-distance moves. We also recommend that you do not pack items with high sentimental or monetary value.
