Columbus Records Nation’s Highest Wage Growth
Posted By: herlihywp Comments: 0 Categories: community, moving, Moving TipsHere’s another great reason for relocating to Columbus: Ohio’s capital city is the current record-holder for highest wage growth among large U.S. cities. In June, the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that Columbus had the largest annual percentage gain in average hourly earnings (6.2 percent). The average wage rose from $21.94 to $23.30. Plus, local unemployment has dropped to 4.2 percent.
Over the past year, wages increased at an annual rate of only 2.1 percent in the nation as a whole. As a result, wages for most U.S. workers barely kept up with inflation.
Why are wages increases higher in Columbus? There’s no single answer. But Fortune magazine points to the city’s diverse economy. A broad base of government, education and large corporate employers helps to cushion central Ohio from recessionary pressures.
