Handle With Care: A Practical Guide to Packing Your Most Fragile Belongings

Some things in your home are easy to pack — books, clothes, and towels. And then there are the pieces that keep you up at night: the crystal your grandmother brought from Europe, the dishes you’ve been collecting for years, and the framed prints that would be impossible to replace. Packing fragile items well isn’t about being overly cautious — it’s about using the right materials in the right order and giving yourself time to do it properly. Here’s what professional movers have learned and what you can apply to your own move.
Start With the Right Supplies
Packing fragile items with the wrong materials is one of the most common — and costly — moving mistakes. Invest in proper packing paper or bubble wrap in a size appropriate to what you’re packing, sturdy small and medium-sized boxes, packing tape, and a marker. Small boxes are better for fragile items than large ones — they prevent overpacking and are far easier to handle carefully. Pick up more bubble wrap than you think you need. Running out mid-pack leads to shortcuts, and shortcuts lead to broken things.
Wrap Every Item Individually
The most important rule for packing fragile items is simple: wrap each item on its own. Every glass. Every plate. Every figurine. Nesting items without individually wrapping each one allows them to contact each other during transit, which can lead to chips, cracks, and breaks—even on a smooth ride. Start with a layer of packing paper, then add bubble wrap on top and secure with tape. The goal is a cushioned shell around every individual piece, so it can’t make direct contact with anything else.
Pack Boxes the Right Way
Once your items are wrapped, how you load the box matters as much as how you wrapped them. Line the bottom of each box with two to three inches of crumpled packing paper or bubble wrap before placing anything inside. Heavier items go in first; lighter, more delicate pieces on top. For dishes and plates, pack them vertically — like records in a crate — rather than flat. This distributes weight more evenly and reduces the chance of breakage. Fill every empty gap with packing material. If you shake the box gently and anything shifts, add more padding before sealing. A box where nothing moves is a box where nothing breaks.
Label Fragile Boxes on Every Side
Marking a box “Fragile” only on top isn’t enough—boxes get turned, stacked, and rotated during a move. Write FRAGILE and THIS SIDE UP in large, clear letters on all four sides. When our crews at Herlihy Moving and Storage see these markings, the box gets handled differently: loaded last, placed on top, and never stacked under heavy items. Good labeling is one of the simplest and most effective ways you can protect what’s inside. Keep fragile boxes grouped together and point them out to your moving team.
Protect Pictures, Mirrors, and Artwork Separately
Framed pieces and mirrors need their own approach. Use corner protectors first, then wrap the entire piece in packing paper, followed by bubble wrap. For larger pieces, sandwich the frame between two pieces of corrugated cardboard before boxing. Always store framed pieces upright — never flat — and keep them away from heavy items in the truck. For artwork of significant value, consider Herlihy’s professional packing services, which use specialty materials and techniques to protect art and fragile decor.
Consider What to Carry With You
Some items are simply too irreplaceable to entrust to a moving truck. Family heirlooms and anything with extreme sentimental value may be worth transporting personally in your own vehicle. If you do, wrap them well, cushion them, and secure them so they can’t slide. For everything else, our local and long-distance crews handle your packed boxes with the care they deserve.
Your Valuables Deserve a Safe Arrival
The things that matter most to you deserve more than a rushed packing job. With the right materials and a little extra time, your fragile items can make it to your new home in exactly the condition they left. And if you’d rather leave the packing to the experts, Herlihy Moving and Storage offers full-service packing with professional-grade materials and decades of experience protecting Ohio families’ most valued possessions.
