If you’re moving to Columbus, OH, soon, be sure to pack your hiking shoes! Many scenic hikes around Columbus make it easy to get back to nature. When you want to return to nature, here are five of our favorite hiking spots near Columbus.
Blendon Woods Loop
If you just have an hour or two to spare, head to Blendon Woods Metro Park. There you’ll find the Blendon Woods Loop, a two-mile trail that loops around a lake, passing through hickory-oak forests and maple-birch groves.
Keep your eyes peeled for resident wildlife, such as raccoons, wild turkeys, deer, and herons. Leave your dogs at home, as they’re not allowed on the trail. This trail has little to no elevation gain and is considered easy.
Olentangy Trail
For a trekking experience that offers a dose of nature without ever leaving the city, walk the Olentangy Trail. This easy trail is about 3.4 miles out and back and winds through several neighborhoods, city parks, and the Ohio State University Campus as you travel along the river.
The trail is flat and well-maintained, making it a good choice for walkers of all abilities. You’ll share the path with runners and bikers.
Alum Creek Trail
When it’s sunny out, and you’ve got a whole day to hike, head for the Alum Creek Trail. This scenic route traverses more than 17 miles of (mostly) paved riverfront, running from Three Creeks Park to Westerville, OH.
If you only have time to do part of the walk, it’s easy to choose one of three major sections instead: North, Central, or South. You can bring your canine friends along as long as you leash them. The trail is a popular biking route, so prepare to share the road.
Scioto Grove Metro Park
Take your pick of trails through Scioto Grove Metro Park, Grove City, OH. This 620-acre reserve offers mature groves of trees and bluffs along the river to explore.
One popular option is the REI River Trail, a two-mile loop that winds through the bluffs overlooking the Scioto River. The minimal elevation gain makes this an easy hike, but it’s not paved, so wear sturdy shoes. Leashed dogs are welcome throughout the park.
Sycamore Trail
When it’s almost golden hour, lace up and head west of the city to Prairie Oaks Metro Park in West Jefferson, OH. Here you’ll find nearly 500 acres to explore, with flowering stretches of grassy prairie and the Big Darby State and Scenic River.
The sunsets are legendary, and a great place to catch one is on the Sycamore Trail, thanks to unobstructed views. This easy hike cuts through the prairie. Late afternoon or early morning is the perfect time for this 2-mile hike.
