Are you moving to Columbus, Ohio, with your dog in tow? Excellent choice — this lively city is packed with fun places to take your dog. After all, your dog loves to get out and explore, too.
Whether you’re heading to an off-leash park for a game of fetch or enjoying a meal at a welcoming eatery, Columbus, OH, boasts many dog-friendly destinations. Here are a few favorites.
Columbus Off-Leash Parks
When your dog is feeling cooped up, there’s no better way to burn off that energy than a visit to an off-leash park! It’s the perfect place for your canine companion to run, explore and socialize with other dogs — and the good news is that there are five off-leash parks in the city.
The city of Columbus requires dog owners to follow a few safety rules when using dog parks, including:
- Dogs must be at least four months old
- No sick or aggressive dogs allowed
- Dogs must remain under voice control
- Only two dogs per owner
- Clean up after your dog
- Dogs must display licenses and vaccination tags
The Big Walnut Dog Park is divided into two areas, one for large dogs and the other for smaller dogs. The Spindler Dog Park also provides separate areas for small and large dogs. Water is available at this park.
Godown Park offers four acres of green space for large dogs and one acre for smaller canines if you need more space to run and play. This lovely park also has a tree nursery, so there’s always plenty of shade on sunny days.
On-Leash Activities
Columbus’s many parks offer on-leash recreation when you’re in the mood for a bike ride or a walk. The Greenway Trail system connects miles and miles of trails with regional parks and offers a mix of urban and green areas.
Blendon Woods offers 653 acres to explore and contains the Walden Waterfowl Refuge and Thoreau Lake. For a quick run or trek, head to Homestead Park, Hilliard, OH, which features a short, paved trail perfect for dog walking.
Eat and Drink With Your Dog
Columbus is home to several pet-friendly restaurants, pubs, and breweries. One of our favorites has to be BrewDog. With multiple locations around the city, you and your doggo can enjoy a local brew on the pet-friendly patio.
If you’re in the mood for a slice or two, head to Gressos Pizza. This Columbus institution welcomes dogs on the patio and even holds “Pups on the Patio” events on weeknights.
You can’t beat the local favorite, Katzingers Delicatessen, for a casual meal. With two locations in Columbus, you can grab a sandwich and sit on the patio with your pup.
When you want to treat your dog, Nom Nom Nom in Hilliard, OH, and Canal Winchester, OH, offers a variety of pet treats, from birthday cakes to ice cream, as well as doggie accessories. In addition, the Cake Hound bakes special occasion cakes, cookies, and cupcakes for pets only.
