In its annual analysis of where moving vans carried relocating Americans, United Van Lines listed Ohio among its “Most Moved From States.”
However, the Buckeye State contains one bright spot where the number of new residents far outstrips the number of those leaving: Columbus. Planners project that Ohio’s capital city will have added 1 million residents by 2050.
Why does Columbus buck the trend of population-losing Midwest cities? The biggest factor is jobs. Ohio’s capital continues to add jobs even faster than it can attract people to fill them. Since employment is the motivating factor behind 65 percent of outbound moves, it is easy to see why fewer people leave Columbus than other areas of the state.
Last year, the central Ohio region added an estimated 21,000 jobs. The 2.1 percent growth rate in jobs was more than twice the state average.
According to economist Bill Lafayette, central Ohio employers are expected to add 19,400 jobs in 2018, putting total employment at a record 1.1 million. This will put the jobs growth rate at 1.8 percent, compared to a national average of 1.4 percent.
