Two generations of Herlihy Moving & Storage leadershipHerlihy Moving & Storage is celebrating our 95th anniversary as a family-owned company that has been passed down through three generations. We were thrilled to talk to Chris Balusik from the Chillicothe Gazette about the history of our company.

It all began in 1920, when John Herlihy, Sr. founded Herlihy Tire & Transportation in Chillicothe, Ohio. We became affiliated with Mayflower Transit – the country’s the nation’s first Interstate Commerce Commission carrier – in 1933.

As the Gazette story explains, the company might have ceased operation in the 1950s if fate had not intervened. John Herlihy, Jr. had planned to move to California in 1954 after finishing his tour of duty as a naval aviator. He was on his way when his car was broken into in New Orleans. He then decided to detour to Chillicothe to pick up his things. And he stayed in Chillicothe for the next 61 years and counting.

John retired in 1998, as sons Joe and James took over to lead the company in new directions. Today, Joe manages operations of our Chillicothe headquarters, while James oversees the central Ohio territory from offices in the Grove City suburb of Columbus. With a third office in Athens, we offer a wide range of moving, storage and logistics services across central and southern Ohio. And, through our affiliation with Mayflower Transit, we can move you wherever you need to go – across the United States or around the globe.

Over time, we’ve expanded beyond moving services into mini-storage, renting of warehouse space and getting in on the ground floor of portable storage offerings. As finish out our first century in business, we continue to introduce the latest advances in equipment and technology to better serve our moving and storage customers.
